U.S. citizenship test practice
Practice the civics part of the naturalization interview with the official USCIS questions. Take a practice test in the same format as the real one, study with flashcards, or read the full list. Questions can be read aloud.
Which test do you take? If USCIS received your Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025, you take the 2025 civics test: the officer asks up to 20 of the 128 questions out loud, and you need 12 correct answers. If you filed before that date, you take the older 2008 test (6 of 10 from 100 questions). This page covers the 2025 test. Check the official USCIS study page for your version. About the civics test
- It is spoken. The officer reads the questions to you and you answer out loud, in English unless you qualify for an exemption.
- Some answers depend on you. Questions about your senators, your representative, your governor, your state capital and current officials have answers that depend on where you live and who is in office at the time of your interview. Check them close to your interview date.
- The English test is separate. You also read and write a sentence in English. See the USCIS study page for the reading and writing vocabulary.
- You get two chances. If you fail any part, USCIS schedules a second interview on that part.
Check your filing date with the N-400 eligibility calculator, gather your papers with the document checklist, and see the fee in the USCIS fee calculator.
