Is premium processing worth it?
Compare premium processing with regular processing for the same case. See what it costs, how much sooner you would hear from USCIS, and whether each choice gets you an answer before the date you need.
This helps you compare, it does not decide for you. Regular processing times change every month and differ by office, so you enter the number yourself. Premium processing guarantees a first action, not an approval. This is general information, not legal advice. An immigration attorney or your school’s international student office can tell you what fits your case.
Questions to ask yourself
- Do I have a hard date? If nothing depends on the timing, the money may not buy you much.
- Is my case ready? Missing documents can bring a request for evidence either way, and that restarts the clock. The fee does not fix a weak case.
- Who pays? For many work visas the employer files and pays for premium processing. Ask before you pay.
- Is regular processing already fast? If it is close to the premium deadline, you save little.
- What happens after approval? A work permit card can take one to three more weeks to be made and mailed, with or without premium processing.
What the fee does not change
- It does not make approval more likely.
- It does not make a green card available sooner. Your priority date still has to be current in the Visa Bulletin.
- It does not speed up other steps, such as a visa interview or a background check.
